This mosque was established by the companion of Prophet Muhammad, Amr ibn al-As, in 642 A.D. in Fustat, the then-capital of Egypt, which is now a part of modern Cairo.

The Citadel was built by Salah al-Din (Saladin) between 1176 and 1183 CE, primarily as a defense against Crusader attacks.
Saladin was the founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty and is well-known for his leadership during the time of the Crusades.
